Spring 2018

Scrollworks offers group instruction for wind and string instruments to children ages 6 to 18. Students also participate in a variety of musical ensembles as they learn, including choir, string & wind chamber groups, an advanced percussion ensemble, the Magic City Youth Orchestra, and our premier ensemble, the Metropolitan Youth Orchestra.

Students at any skill level are welcome. We loan instruments (if available) for a refundable $25 deposit. Most Saturdays, we serve lunch and provide a 30 minute mini-concert by local musicians, professional and advanced students from the Alabama School of Fine Arts and nearby universities.

While we emphasize learning music as a group experience, members of the Metropolitan Youth Orchestra receive free private lessons. Through our contract with the Kennedy Center/VSA students with disabilities may receive supplemental instruction at no additional cost.

Piano and voice lessons are offered as an elective to students who have completed at least one semester of instruction on an orchestral instrument. Other electives include choir, music theory and music appreciation.

Classes and orchestra rehearsals are offered on Monday evenings or Saturdays at St. Paul UMC in Birmingham's Civil Rights District. Generally, beginning classes are Saturday morning, intermediate classes mid-day Saturday and the percussion ensemble and Magic City Youth Orchestra on Saturday afternoon. The Metropolitan Youth Orchestra rehearses Monday evenings. Private lessons are offered both days. Classes at the different levels are offered on Monday evenings depending on demand and teacher availability.

Registration for the Spring 2018 term, which includes 12 instruction days plus a jury day, recital camp and a final concert, is $80. Private voice and piano lessons are offered on a sliding scale from $144 to $300. Music theory and appreciation classes are $35 each.

Registration will be open to the public on December 18, 2017. The form will be posted here on the website. To receive email notification when the form is live, please sign up for the newsletter on the Home page.
