We offer group instruction and ensembles for orchestral instruments to children ages 6 to 18.

Due to curriculum and scheduling requirements, we start most new beginners in the summer or fall. However, we do have the following options open to new beginners:

  • Age 6 & 7: Instrument Explorer (Saturday, 1 pm, 30 min) - Learn the basics of music theory (reading, rhythm), while exploring the orchestral instruments
  • Age 8+: Rhythm/Percussion (Monday, 6 pm or Saturday, 1 pm, 1 hour) - Explore rhythms and percussion techniques in a fun ensemble setting
  • Age 8+: Beginning Violin (Saturday, 9 am, 1 hour)
  • Age 8+: Beginning Winds (Saturday, 9 am, 1 hour)
  • Electives: Choir (Saturday 10 am or 11 am, 1 hour)

Students who already play an instrument will be required to audition for placement. Music Theory (30 minutes) is an elective.
Beginners/Advanced Beginners will participate in a 1 hour group class on Saturday morning for wind players. For string students, classes are Saturday morning or Monday evening. All are encouraged to participate in choir.
Intermediate students will participate in a 1 hour group class on Saturday afternoon and the Saturday chamber ensemble (1 hour) from 1 pm to 3 pm.
Advanced students are placed in the Metropolitan Youth Orchestra, which rehearses Monday nights from 6 pm to 8 pm. Metropolitan Youth Orchestra members receive FREE private lessons on their orchestra instrument.

Piano and Voice Private Lessons: Only available as an elective to students in the advanced beginner level or above on an orchestral instrument.

For Parents: Scrollworks 101 class (Saturdays, 12:15 to 1 pm) FREE - how to help your students practice, how to choose an instrument, musical opportunities, etc.

Each class or lesson once per week, following the calendar shown on the Home page.
There are 12 weekly sessions for the Spring semester, plus a jury week (evaluation), the GBMEA Festival and a final concert.

We are strict about attendance. Only two absences are allowed per semester. No make up unless we cancel (if absolutely necessary due to weather). Please carefully check the calendar.

Instruments: If we have instruments available, we loan them to active students for a refundable $25 deposit. (Please note that we expect students to commit to their instrument for one full school year before considering a change.)

Integrated Experience Credits: Each semester, all students are required to attend 2 live music performances outside of Scrollworks. We will ask students to turn in a short report on each. We will provide information on free concerts and we often are offered free tickets by local arts organizations including the Alabama Symphony Orchestra and Opera Birmingham.

Why You Should Register: Our program has limited openings for new students each semester. Students currently enrolled get priority access to classes (and instruments) offered in subsequent semesters. This includes the 18-month ASFA Track series of classes for students who are considering auditioning for music at the Alabama School of Fine Arts (covering audition and aural skills and private lessons focused on audition pieces.)

Payable in full in advance for the semester.
