Through our contract with the VSA/Kennedy Center, Scrollworks is able to provide supplemental instruction to students with disabilities so that they are able to participate fully in classes and ensembles with their peers. There is no additional cost for this additional instruction. Please note whether your student has a disability on the registration form. You may explain in the comments. This information remains confidential.

Attendance, Tardiness & Practicing Requirements:

Students may not miss more than two days of class, lessons or rehearsals per semester. Please check the calendar on the home page. If you know your child will miss more than two days, please do not register. Make-up classes or lessons are not available.

Attendance at recital camp and the final semester concert are required.

Students should always arrive a few minutes early for their classes, lessons and rehearsals. Teachers are not required to teach a student who is more than 10 minutes late. Repeated tardiness will impact placement in the subsequent semester.

Practicing at home is critical to progress on any instrument. Teachers will provide guidance for how often and how long students at each age and skill level should practice. A log will be provided and will be reviewed each week during class or lessons. If your family cannot commit to a regular practice regime, please do not register.

Integrated Experience Credits: Each semester, all students are required to attend 2 live music performances outside of Scrollworks. We will ask students to turn in a short report on each. We will provide information on free concerts and we often are offered free tickets by local arts organizations including the Alabama Symphony Orchestra and Opera Birmingham.

Munch & Music: At noon on most Saturdays, a simple nutritious lunch is provided for students, staff and parents for FREE. Local musicians, our teachers and students preparing for auditions are often scheduled to perform during this time. Donations of food, paper goods and/or money in support of M&M are gratefully accepted. Volunteers to perform as well as to prepare and serve the food are always welcome. Please see Melissa Surles at the check-in desk.

New Student Orientation is Saturday, January 5:
  • 9 am - String Instrument Sizing (only for students needing a string instrument!)
  • 9:30 am - Music Theory evaluation test for new students - Required (This is to determine baseline knowledge. No previous study is expected.)
  • 10 am - General Info for New Families - Required (<30 min)

Please provide additional information and/or scheduling requirements in the comment section of the registration form once it is posted.

Online payment of the $80 minimum fee is required at time of registration. (Be sure to hit the submit button at the bottom of the form.) Later you may receive an invoice from our bookkeeper for any instrument deposits and/or additional classes.

Forms are processed in the order received.
